Today Mona and I worked on the hypotheses we came up with:

1. Religion is the heart of the Marshallese community and with the breach of their churches, it promotes the marshallese youth to alcohol and drugs.

2. God brings the community churches together as one but with the corruption of money resulting in seperation of churches, it has is negatively impacting the marshallese youth.

3. The urban village of the marshallese community lies here in Orange County, due to the separation of churches it has a impact towards the marshallese youths' health.

These were just some of our ideas on what our hypotheses would look like, we need to work on it more. These were like rough drafts and just brainstorming, we will be working on it more a little more the next time we meet.

Sept. 16, 2009

Today we met up with Diana again to talk more in depth about researching. We learned the elements of scientific research and the scientific method, we also learned the different ways of how public health reserchers would start off their project or research. We brainstormed about the different issues or causes in the marshallese community, we sort of mapped out the main cause and how it affects the youths' health whether its physical, mental/emotional, and social. We also learned the different ways to map out our thoughts and what we know, one way is Conceptual Model which is a map of concepts and their relationship. The other type of model is Logic Model which maps out what is actually going on. We've learned quiet a bit on researching, and so our homework assignment to start off our researh is to come up with at least 10 possible hypothesis for friday so that we can discuss it with Diana.

Sept. 15, 2009

Today Diana Tisnado came to GCN to talk to us about our research project. Unfortunately, we will not get to the interviewing part of our project because of how much time we have left. What we're going to be focusing on the process of how to conduct surveys and interviews. So even though we won't get to the interviewing part, at least we'll have a good start foundation that we can continue to work on maybe in the near future.

Contact Lists

Yokwe! Today we worked on our Survey questions, Joe was very helpful in giving us pointers on how to come up with questions to ask. It was really challenging for Mona and I because we didn't want to ask inappropriate questions or questions that may offend the person we are interviewing. We broke down our questions into 3 categories; Personal, Community, and Health. We also worked on Contact list, we are looking to work with 10 youths ranging from 15-25 and adults 26 and up. Tomorrow we will be meeting up again here at GCN to finish up our Contact list.

Sept 10, 2009

Today I met up with Mona to discuss our "Internship Goals" paper. I also talked to Joe over the phone about my availability to see when was the next time we'll see each other so that we can discuss our project with Diana and I also met a new member for our team name Chas whose from the Chomoru community and we're glad that he wants to help us with this project because we need all the help we can get to launch this project. Tonight, Mona and I will be finalizing our paper and will be turning in our goal sheet tomorrow to Joe and Jay.



Ultimate Goals:

1. To find out the how separation of churches are affecting the youth and future generation in the Marshallese Community.
   

2. To determine the health affects it has on the youth

3. Collecting data by interviewing the youth


So far these are some of our goals during this research project, we hope that this project is feasible and can be done.

Sept. 7, 2009

Today Mona and I discussed our plans on who to interview and what questions we'll be using for our interviews. We spent most of our time brainstorming and writing down our plans. We agreed to to work on the "Personal Internship Goals" paper separately so that the next time we meet up we can look over eachothers' papers and to finalize it together.

September 3, 2009

Today we discussed what our research project was going to be about. We talked about how separation of churches have a major impact on the youths in the Marshallese community. I thought that we've accomplished alot today. We've also came up with a clever name for our researh project. I'm excited about this because I know it'll have a big impact on our community and I just can't wait to start. The word iakwe/yokwe in marshallese means love, hi, and I love you, and since our project is about how segregation of churches brings hate to our community and how our goal at the end of our research is to hopefully one day bring our communities back together as one, what better way to name our project "1akwe".
